Board Update #104 [2005/01/17]

Hi Folks,

The Board of Directors met in a combined quarterly workshop-annual planning retreat format on Thursday, January 13.  Because most of the time available was to be devoted to the planning retreat, the workshop agenda was confined to two subjects.  The first subject was a complete review of Pulte's revised land plan for the continuing development of the community.  Ken Hull intends to announce the details of this plan to the community at the Forum Club Meeting on Friday, January 28 at 9 am.  An effort will be made to televise this meeting and we will inform you of those arrangements ahead of time.  Ken has asked us to not preempt his announcement by discussing what we learned in this update and we will honor that request.  You may find that frustrating but, since he took us into his confidence early, we will have the opportunity to identify any relevant issues in time for him to address them before the community announcement.  Suffice it to say that Karen, Al and I are very pleased with Pulte's plans and trust that you will feel the same way once they are announced.

Our second workshop agenda item was a new Pool Policy, triggered by the pending opening of the new outdoor pool at the Hidden Cypress Golf and Recreation Center.  Here is the process we followed in developing this policy: The Fitness Advisory Committee met several times, receiving input from residents along the way.  They made a recommendation directly to the board.  Just as a result of that recommendation, the resident board members received a lot of resident input.  The board then discussed the policy informally at our December Workshop.  The resident board members then drafted a policy proposal and reviewed it with management to assure that it could be implemented and revisions were made as a result of that review.  Finally, the resident board member proposal was reviewed with the full board and the decision was made to place it on the January Board of Directors Meeting agenda.  Resident input will be taken at that time and then the board will vote.

When formulating this policy, here are the principal factors that the resident board members considered:
  1. Residents wish to use the pools most convenient to where they live.
  2. Residents wish to have the majority of the available pool time reserved for adult use only.
  3. Residents wish for their guests to be able to use whichever community pool is most appropriate to their swimming ability.
  4. Residents support the exclusion of uninvited guests.

I am going to summarize the proposed pool rules below.  I caution everyone who is interested to read the official policy proposal when it is posted at Pinckney Hall prior to the board meeting in case their are any small differences in wording.  I would also caution that portions of this policy will not be implemented immediately and I will indicate which ones they are.

Under the new Pool Policy, the Pool Rules would be as follows:

  1. Swimming hours for children (anyone under the age of 19 years) in all Sun City pools will be 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM daily.  Designated lap lanes will continue to be reserved for lap swimmers during children's hours.
  2. An adult (19 years or older) must accompany children under the age of 16.  Children ages 16-18 may use the pools during children's hours unaccompanied by presenting appropriate ID.
  3. Children must be 40" tall in order to use the pools.  Children who are over the age of 4 years but are under 40" tall may use the pools upon presentation of proof of age.
  4. Invited guests who are not accompanied by their resident host must enter the Barataria and Hidden Cypress pools through the respective fitness facilities.  All guests must have a Guest Card (once this system is in place) issued under the SCHH Guest Policy (to be implemented later).
  5. Residents must present their Activity Card and guests must present their Guest Card at all pools if requested by a Pool Monitor, staff member or Security Officer.
  6. Residents may not, under any circumstances, allow anyone to use their Activity Card to gain access to the pools.

These rules will be incorporated into the Community Rules and will be subject to enforcement as are all community rules.  The following procedures will be employed in order to effectively implement the pool rules:

  1. Residents and guests who accompany them may enter the pool areas by swiping their Activity Card at one of the outdoor gates.  They may also enter through the entrances to the Fitness Center or the fitness area entrance at the Hidden Cypress Golf and Recreation Center.  As noted above, all unaccompanied guests will have to enter through the fitness facilities and they will have to present their Guest Cards once this system is in place.
  2. Residents and guests may use either the indoor or poolside restrooms at the Barataria Pool.  Return from the poolside restrooms for unaccompanied guests must be through the fitness center since an Activity Card will be necessary to operate the outdoor gates.  At the Hidden Cypress Pool, residents and guests will use the poolside restrooms or the restrooms located in the fitness facility.  Bathing attire is not allowed in the restaurant or pro shop areas at the Hidden Cypress Center or any of the other community buildings.  At the Riverbend Pool, residents and guests will use the poolside restrooms.  Bathing attire is not allowed in the Riverbend Lodge.

Again, if you are concerned about specifics, be sure to read the official version which will be posted at Pinckney Hall [and at this web site] before the board meeting.  You will have the opportunity to speak for or against the proposal by signing up before the start of the board meeting.

The planning retreat portion of the session will be presented in another Board Update.
