My Position on Commercial Advertising in Town Square
Report 2 has been a long time coming. My first report dealt in detail with the Board meeting on Aug 8. Since then, between published minutes and Jerry's board updates, the basics of Board doings have been pretty well covered. Now, however, I feel I should give our community an inside look at my thoughts on an upcoming issue..
The Board is going to consider extension of a program whereby a certain part of the common ground of our community is given over to commercial interests for an extended period of time. I refer, of course, to the softball field and advertising banners on the outfield fences.
My position regarding commercial advertising on common property has three parts:
advertising in connection with a single event, such as a tennis tournament, other large-scale "games" events, or a one-day pavilion event are acceptable
long-term use of common property for paid advertising is not condoned by current board policy and each such situation would be considered on its own merits, but I would not favor any new programs
the softball field is an exception, and I'm favorable to that program going forward on an annual renewal basis
The many SunCitizens who support the current program need hear no more.
To those who took seriously my stance to preserve and enhance the lifestyle--what brought us all here in the first place, I can only say that I haven't given up that ideal. Lifestyle includes not only the look of our cultural center but the vitality of the community. The latter is pulling more weight with me as we approach the Board meeting. I'll have many battles to fight on the preservation front. I'll have to pick those where there's a chance to do some real good, and I don't think this is one of them.
