Below is a browse version of the Guidelines:

1.      Purpose.  The purpose of SCCT’s SUNNY Awards is to recognize individual excellence in the various aspects of Community Theatre productions. The following guidelines apply.

2.      Awards Categories.

  1. SUNNY Awards will be presented annually for performance and direction in both traditional and monthly productions and should be based on specific criteria similar to those given below.
  1. Awards will be presented on three equal levels:

·        Performance in, and direction of, traditional productions;

(NOTE: After 2007, categories may be divided into musical and non-musical productions.)

·        Performance in, and direction of, monthly productions;

·        Special Awards of Merit (SAMMY) for contributions to traditional and/or monthly productions

  1. Awards for traditional productions will be as follows:

·        Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role

·        Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role

·        Best Performance by an Actor in a Non-Leading Role

·        Best Performance by an Actress in a Non-Leading Role

·        Best Director

·        Best Debut Performance (optional and limited to performers who have never appeared on stage in any capacity)

·        Notable Performance(s) (optional and limited to maximum of two awards to be presented to performers and/or directors whose work, while not considered the “best”, was exceptional)

  1. Awards for monthly productions will be as follows:

·        Notable Performance by an Actor (maximum of three awards)

·        Notable Performance by an Actress (maximum of three awards)

·        Notable Performance by a Director (maximum of two awards)

  1. Awards for special contributions (“Special Award of Merit” - SAMMY) will be presented to individuals making significant contributions in any area other than performance and direction associated with productions.

(NOTE: these awards will be in the form of plaques rather than statuettes.)

3.      Nomination Process.

  1. Nomination Committees.  At the beginning of each year, the President, SCCT Executive will appoint the following nominating committees:

·        Committee to nominate Best Director in the Traditional Production category

·        Committee to nominate individuals for awards for performance and special merit in Traditional Production category

·        Committee to nominate individuals for awards for performance, direction, and special merit in Monthly Production category

  1. Nominations for directing awards associated with traditional productions are to be made by a committee composed of producers/directors involved with theatrical productions with no direct connection to Sun City Community Theatre, e.g., May River Theatre, South Carolina Repertory Theatre, Arts Centre For Coastal Carolina, etc.
  1. Nominations for performance awards associated with traditional productions are to be made by directors selected from a “pool” composed of those who have directed traditional productions in the past.  No director should nominate any performer from a production with which the director is directly or indirectly involved.
  1. Nominations for performance awards associated with monthly productions will be made by members of a “pool” composed of those who have directed monthly productions in the past.  No director should nominate any performer from a production with which the director is directly or indirectly involved.
  1.  Nominations for SAMMY Awards will be made by directors of specific traditional productions and should be limited to a one nominee per production.  A nominee can also be submitted for contributions to monthly productions.  A maximum of five (5) SAMMY awards may be awarded annually.
  1. The nominating committees for Traditional and Monthly Productions will provide a listing of all nominations (e.g., nominee, role, and production) to the Chairman of the Sunny Selection Committee and to the President, SCCT, who will, in turn, prepare individual notification letters to each nominee.

4.      Selection Process.

  1. Decisions relating to the presentation of performance and directing awards associated with monthly productions will be made by a separate Sunny selection committee, comprised on experienced SCCT directors and performers, and appointed by the President, SCCT.
  2. Decisions relating to the presentation of directing awards associated with traditional productions will be made by the nomination committee for this category.

5.      Awards Presentation.

  1. The SUNNY Awards Ceremony will be held in January of each year and will be accomplished based on the efforts of a producer, director, stage manager, technical crew, etc., as are usually associated with any major production.
  2. All Nominees will be notified in writing of the specific role and production for which their performance has been nominated.
  3. Members of the nomination and selection committees will be made known to the SCCT Board of Directors, but should otherwise remain anonymous until decisions relating to the awards are finished.  All committee members and their responsibilities will be identified in the program at the annual Sunny Awards Ceremony.
  4.  A program, listing all nominees, by category (e.g., notable performance by an actress in a monthly production) and the role (or responsibility) and show for which they have been nominated will be available at the annual Sunny Awards Ceremony.  A separate listing of all awardees and nominees will be available for email release to the entire membership immediately following the annual Sunny Awards Ceremony.

*  Special Note:  The SCCT Board has given consideration to the Selection of a Best Production (of the Year) Award by popular vote, once a method can be developed to identify individual members of SCCT who have attended performances of each of the productions.  There will be no such award in 2007.
