US 278 Lane Closings

The state Department of Transportation has decided that all nighttime lane closures on U.S. 278 in greater Bluffton must wait until 9 p.m.

Department staffers will continue to evaluate the situation as traffic volumes change at the end of summer. The start time for lane closures may go back to 7 p.m. if the highway can handle the traffic, according to department spokesman James Law.

APAC-Southeast, the company widening the highway to six lanes between Simmonsville Road and Moss Creek, said pipe work will continue for the next week or two.

Thursday night, lanes on U.S. 278 were scheduled to be closed near Hilton Head National golf course. Eastbound lanes were scheduled to be cleared by midnight, while westbound lanes were scheduled to be clear by 7 a.m., according to APAC spokeswoman Deborah Galloway.
