Previous News  Next News - Incorporation - Some Residents Speak

Seven residents of our community have chosen to form a committee to work toward incorporation of the area around and including Sun City Hilton Head. While ambitious and committed, they have chosen to work in opposition to our governance structure.

One of these people is the chairman of our Government and Business Affairs Committee. His own committee believes that incorporation needs to be studied before any proposal to endorse such a venture. He is now also chairman of the incorporation committee, an obvious potential for conflict of interest. Another of the committee members is an elected member of the SCHH Board of Directors. He also is working against the wishes of our designated leadership group.

These seven residents have also chosen to ignore the work of the Strategic Planning Committee. This committee worked from 2004 to 2006 to form a plan for the future direction of our community. In preparing their recommendations, they interviewed over 700 residents of SCHH. They led workshops that included virtually every leadership committee in our community. They asked and received input that gave them the direction that the residents wanted to see our community work toward. This committee continues its efforts and will soon be ready to update their recommendations in view of the slowdown in home sales within SCHH.

In comparison, the committee of seven has not formally asked any residents what they think about incorporation. They did not even explore all the ramifications of incorporation before their rush to push SCHH toward a decision of serious consequence. It is unclear why they believe they are the ones most capable of making the proper decision. Are all residents in committees they have previously worked with wrong?

We would ask the residents of Sun City Hilton Head to consider which they would rather follow: a well planned and competently functioning governance structure or a renegade group of residents who believe their thoughts outweigh past and future careful planning and oversight by the whole community?

Do you fully understand what they are trying to do well enough to sign a petition supporting their effort? And do these seven people truly comprehend the impact of their rush to implement such a monumental change to our great community?

Sun City residents have a history of working together toward making their community the best place they could choose to live. Let's keep it that way.
