NEW DELIVERY SYSTEM

I

n an effort to cut printing costs and delivery time, this is the first edition of Footlights that will be sent to members via e-mail. With more than 900 members at more than 500 addresses, delivering the newsletters was becoming too much of a chore. Some other clubs have also experienced the same problem and are e-mailing newsletters. For those without e-mail, or who cannot open attachments, the newsletter will be delivered to their lower mailboxes. Call Perry Molinaro at 705-9168 to have one delivered to your address. Additional copies will be available at the June meeting.

MINI-PRODUCTIONS

E

xcerpts from “Music Man” will be presented at the June 9 meeting. The program, directed by Jim Mahoney, will feature “Overture,” “Ya Got Trouble,” “Goodnight My Someone,” “Seventy-six Trombones,” “Pick-A-Little and Goodnight Ladies,” “The Sadder But Wiser Girl,” “Lida Rose and Will I Ever Tell You,” “Till There Was You” and “Wells Fargo Wagon.” Elaine Ragland stars as Marion Paroo; Jim Mahoney as Harold Hill; Dan Kam, John Lavelle, Gary Morgan and Martin Spahr as the quartet; Joan DeLude, Joan Galasso, Phylis Giglinto, Cindy Scott, Gabrielle Testa and Janet Van Name as the Pick-A-Little girls.

Remember those long-ago days before television when we would gather around the radio? The Community Theater will bring back that golden era at the July 14 meeting with an evening of classic radio skits performed originally by such legends as Abbott & Costello, Burns & Allen, Baby Snooks and the mysterious “Shadow.” A Sun City adaptation of Sherlock Holmes will be part of the fun. The large cast includes Bob Bonn, Carol Brown, Carol Cutrona, Carol and Larry Della Vecchia, Joan Flynn, Phylis Giglinto, Lou Hall, Rosalyn Jacobson, Hal Meeks, Marvin Pearlstein, Barbara Postel, Pat Schwartz and Dominick Wasielewski. Backgound music will be provided by Natalie Davis, and Bob Malito will handle sound effects. The program is under the direction of Joan Galasso, who promises an evening of nostalgia and laughter.

In August, Marion Anzalone will be directing “The Challenge of Bureaucracy,” by Carole Glickfeld. It will star Jane Johnston, Joan Inniss, Marion Shuttleworth and Elaine Cederquist. This will be followed by several monologues, with Larry Della Vecchia directing.

Check the monthly Community Theater listings in SunSations for updates.

‘Sail Away’

T

his fall’s production of “Follies 2005” will feature three evenings (Sept. 15, 16 and 17) of comedy, song and dance woven around a cruise ship theme. As mentioned in the March edition of Footlights, the show promises everything from lifeboat drills to island excursions. About 100 people auditioned for the show in May, with about 20 who had never appeared in a “Follies” production. Bob Taylor, Judy Clark and Art Hansen are directing the show.

Carl Lehman is heading the advertising campaign and needs volunteers to call on prospective advertisers. Call Carl at 705-5184 to help. To help with publicity, backstage, etc., call Steve Koehl, producer, at 705-7771.

Ticket information will be provided in advance of the show. Community Theater members, as usual, will have first choice of tickets at reduced prices. So get ready to “sail away” in September to a world of sea captains, island beauties and good fun.

ADVANCE NOTICE

A

uditions for the November production, “You Can’t Take It With You,” will be held Sept. 22, 24 and 25 in Pinckney Hall. The three-act comedy, by Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman, will be directed by Perry Molinaro.

Anyone who has seen the movie version, which starred James Stewart, Jean Arthur, Lionel Barrymore and Edward Arnold among others, will recall the funny goings-on and strange activities at the Sycamore home.

The movie version, however, strays from the stage script. Both have the same plot in which Tony, son of the Kirbys, falls in love with Alice Sycamore and brings his parents to dine at the Sycamore home on the wrong evening. The shock sustained by the Kirbys, who are invited to eat cheap food, shows Alice that marriage with Tony is out of the question.

Tony, however, is not about to give up Alice. In the end, Mr. Kirby is converted to the happy madness of the Sycamores.

The cast is fairly large – nine men, seven women and three extras – but some roles are considerably smaller than others.

It’s a well-written play with a bunch of comic characters who keep funny situations moving from start to curtain.

The play will be presented at 7 p.m. Nov. 17-19 in Pinckney Hall.
