Theatre club fair

Y

ou won’t want to miss a special membership event scheduled from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. May 24. That’s when SCCT will present its own version of a “club fair” with booths and displays devoted to the many activities in which members participate. Displays will feature everything from makeup to set design. Members will have a chance to meet with directors and producers to discuss onstage and backstage opportunities; watch demonstrations on makeup and lighting; sign up for workshops in acting, directing, etc.; try their hand at play reading and improvisation. Light refreshments and drinks will be served.

Note: The meeting is on the fourth Thursday in May rather than the usual second Thursday.

The club fair will be followed by the regular monthly meeting and dramatic performances by participants in Carl Nusbaum’s actors workshop.

A spectacular show

S

CCT will present its biggest production ever with “My Fair Lady” at 7:30 p.m. June 21, 22, 23, 28, 29 and 30 at the Bluffton High School Performing Arts Center.

This will be the second SCCT production at the high school. Last year, “1776” was presented and the positive response led to this year’s decision to present another musical.

Anne Nusbaum and Wendell MacNeal are the directors, Ralph Spiegel is the producer, Art Hansen is music director, Judy Cummings is the choreographer and Janice Kraimer is the directors’ administrative assistant.

With a revolving stage with three separate scenes designed by SCCT’s Gordon Hooper, this promises to be the theatre’s most spectacular show yet.

The large cast features Elaine Ragland as Eliza Doolittle and Bob McCloskey as Henry Higgins. Other cast members are Patricia Arnao, Lew Apgar, Bob Johnson, Jim McGrath, Frank Bulson, Gordon Hooper, Sharon Walker, Joan Galasso, Gabrielle Testa, Wendell Turner, Mary Anne Gebler, Pat Schwartz, Dottie Apgar, Stu Ritchkin, Irving Lipsky, Marvin Pearlstein, Jack Wittman, Don Easson, Elaine Bily, Bill Andrusic, Joan DeLude, Monica Taft, Marilyn Bateman, Pat Strickland and Genny Scrivner.

Dance ensemble members are Judy Cummings, Ginny Easson, Patricia Galloway, Joe Panzarino, Barbara McDowell, Lois DiRocco, Jeanne Koehl and Brenda Compton.

Member ticket day will be May 24 and sales to the general public will start May 25.

Follies, etc.

C

arl Nusbaum and Marvin Pearlstein will direct the 2007 version of Follies Sept. 13-15. Bob Crewdson will be the producer. Marv has written several plays for SCCT and produced the Sunny Awards program the last five years. Carl has directed a number of SCCT productions, including “Last of the Red Hot Lovers” and “The Odd Couple.” He has also co-directed several SCCT musicals and Follies 2004. Auditions were held May 14. Other audition dates: 3 to 5 p.m. May 23 and 1 to 4 p.m. May 26 in Pinckney Hall. Call Carl at 705-3729 or Marv at 705-5091 for information.

“Moon Over Buffalo” by Ken Ludwig will be presented in early November. Bob Taylor will direct the fast-moving farce, featuring sword fights, mistaken identities, nonstop action and mass confusion. Auditions will be held in August, but scripts are available for review. Call Bob at 379-5242 for information.

Stay tuned for updates at monthly meetings, at the community Web site and with member e-mail messages and Footlights.

Magnolia Hall

T

he long-awaited construction of Magnolia Hall is still on schedule for completion in 2008. Al Reuben, president of the community Board of Directors, made that announcement at the board’s April 26 meeting. It was also stated that the Sales Center will be turned over to residents at the end of this year and provide offices for CAM staff and amenity space for residents.

Reimbursements

C

arl Lehmann, club treasurer, requests that only the forms posted on the community Web site or on Steve Koehl’s Web site be used for reimbursement requests for expenses on any show. The forms provide space for information needed to account for SCCT funds. All forms must be signed by the director or producer.

Congratulations

J

an Henson Dow’s play “The Spiral Stair” was chosen for production in the first “6 Women Playwriting Festival” in April in Colorado Springs, Colorado, sponsored by the Pikes Peak Arts Council. The same play is a semi-finalist in another national contest. Jan conducted the playwriting workshop for which SCCT sponsored at least eight participants last fall. Jan and Wendell MacNeal selected the four best plays for presentation in a “Night of Originals” at the March meeting.

2008 directors sought

B

ob McCloskey, head of the play steering committee, is seeking members who would consider directing one of the four major productions for 2008. They should also identify the productions they would like to present.

Bob suggests that anyone consider the production to be presented in January at the Ulmer Auditorium in Bluffton, which will be previewed in December at Pinckney Hall (can be a comedy or drama but not a musical so as not to conflict with any May River productions); the production to be presented in March at Pinckney and the one to be presented in June at Bluffton High School have historically been musicals but are not necessarily limited to those kinds of shows; the production to be presented in November at Pinckney has historically been a comedy but is not limited to a comedy; the recommended “mix” for 2008 productions is two musicals and two non-musicals.

Responses are sought by no later than June.

Prospective directors are invited to consider monthly productions as well.

Call Bob at 705-5974 for information.

Alternate space

W

ith Pinckney Hall’s stage and ballroom in ever-increasing demand, SCCT has decided to lease an off-campus facility to provide an alternative site to rehearse small scenes for traditional and monthly productions. The facility also provides consolidated storage of properties and costumes. The facility is on Route 141, three miles north of the rear entrance to Wal-Mart.
